Family Law Project (FLP)
Family Law Project students support the work of Ontario’s Family Law Information Centre staff, duty counsel and advice lawyers, which involves assisting unrepresented litigants with the process of completing and filing their court forms, and helping them to navigate the court process. Last year, FLP programs continued to operate in Windsor, London, Toronto, Brampton, Kingston, and Ottawa. Due to the success of the program, in March, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) agreed to fund the cost of hiring 7 law students in London, Toronto, and Kingston to continue this work at the courts over the summer months.
Similarly, PBSC students at the University of Calgary sit alongside family social justice workers who assist individuals with their cases in family court. PBSC at the University of New Brunswick is in the process of setting up a Family Law Project.
“The FLP is a unique, one-of-a-kind program enabling law students to obtain constructive feedback on their document drafting from advice and duty counsels, as well as judges. Thus the FLP offers students an incredible opportunity for networking, as well as to hone document drafting skills.”
